If you’re passionate about science, design and food then food engineering might be for you! In this line of work the responsibilities lie in using calculations and planning to bring equipment into the workforce and make sure it is maintained properly. This diagram shows the general process.

Health and safety plays an important factor especially in the food and drink industry. For example, in abattoirs there is a lot of heavy machinery and equipment that can be prone to incidents. Therefore, the engineers need to design safe machinery including emergency stop buttons and safety guards blocking sharp metal ends. Also, lots of meat loading bay arms are now robotic so humans don’t have to lift the heavy load which would previously cause strain on workers from doing it manually.

Equipment and machinery also has to be designed to reduce as many problems that may occur as possible. This prolongs the life of machinery and makes it more efficient so things run smoothly and the food companies don’t have to pay as much on repairs.

Technological advancements are also something engineers are at the forefront of and it is there job to design and bring in the new food products that will help people to produce or sell food for years to come.
