What’s it all about then?

As Packaging Manager you’ll be responsible for all of the work in your company that is related to product packaging, so you’ll lead a department that provides accurate and timely provision of packaging information, new packaging development, stock management, forecasting and customer relationship management.

What might I be doing?

Your job will entail a variety of different components including the management of a team of specialist packaging developers and designers. You’ll oversee their activity and ensure they’re working effectively.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly including the provision and updating of specifications in compliance with new legislation, overseeing all trials and testing of new materials, liaising with internal and external contacts, presentations to customers and so on.

What will be expected of me?

The role will require you to have a good working knowledge of all departments that you work with, for instance marketing and production.

Should any problems arise, it is important that you are able to resolve these speedily and effectively.

You’ll need to have excellent technical knowledge.

What can I expect?

You can expect a busy schedule as you’ll be in charge of a busy, high profile department - as the food industry continues to grow and new packaging technology and approaches offer new ways to present and protect products, so too does the development of new products - and every new product will need specific packaging.

Like many roles in the food sector, this is a very fulfilling one. Not everyone can walk into a supermarket, glance at a billboard or watch TV ad breaks and see their work on display - but you can!

What about the pay?

This is a vitally important senior role in the food manufacturing sector and one which, even when fully qualified, will take several years’ experience to get in the frame for.

The salary varies with company but you can expect be earning around £30,000 - £40,000. As ever, some roles in some companies will pay more, others slightly less - so these figures should only be used as a guideline.

What qualifications do I need to get in?

This is a job for someone with several years’ experience but your initial degree should be food and/or business related.

You should strongly consider degrees in Food Technology and Food Science and other related subjects, particularly those courses that offer modules in packaging related areas.

What about further training?

Your company will likely provide you with the opportunity for both part-time qualifications or CPD activities which will help you do even better in your job.
