What does a Higher-Level apprentice do?
As a technical HLA, I complete three-year long placement within the technical department at Samworth brothers. Each placement is a different job role, allowing me to gain hands on experience in roles such as Specifications Technologist, Process Technologist, or Compliance. I also complete block placements at university which are linked to the placements, helping me learn and gain experience.
How did you end up in this job?
After college, I originally planned to go to university but soon realised A-levels and classroom study wasn’t for me. I then came across this opportunity on the government website. I prefer hands on learning and wanted to develop real workplace experience, so I applied - and I’m glad I did.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
Apply! You will learn so much by getting involved, meeting new people and have amazing opportunities. You receive great support from both the workplace and the university, and by the end, you’ll have a degree, three years of experience, and a strong professional network. It’s a brilliant way to explore different roles and discover what you enjoy.
How long have you been doing your job?
I have been doing this role for 6 months now. I have 6 more months of my current placement as a Specifications Technologist before I move to another placement and learn a new role.
If you could give your 16-year-old self some career advice, what would it be?
Don’t worry if you do not know what job you want! Say yes to all opportunities as you never know what you will enjoy and who you will meet. Every experience teaches you something valuable and helps you develop new skills.
