What does a raw material QA do?
Typically, my time is spent checking the raw materials against a specification to ensure the quality is up to standard, and non-conforming suppliers if it is not. There is a schedule for all our raw materials, as well as investigations for ongoing product issues and customer complaints. I regularly hold meetings with our suppliers to discuss any ongoing issues, and even visit our suppliers at times, which has taken me all over the country. I also attend university every 6-8 weeks as part of my apprenticeship.
How did you end up in this job?
I always knew I wanted to go into the food industry- but I never knew in what role. I completed one year of my AS levels, then left to go to college as I was not sure what I wanted to do. I applied for the apprenticeship through Samworth to be a HLA but turned it down as it involved moving site each year. I then joined the Kettleby/ Samworth team as a raw material QA, then got offered to do the apprenticeship but stay at my site for the duration of the course. I accepted the offer, and here I am!
What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
Do not be afraid to ask questions, you will never stop learning in this industry, and there are so many different roles. The more you learn, the better!
How long have you been doing your job?
I started my role in June 2021, and my degree began in September 2021
If you could give your 16-year-old self some career advice, what would it be?
Do not pressure yourself into doing anything if you are not sure that it is right for you. I was convinced for a long time university was the only place for me, until I discovered the apprenticeships that were available. They are the perfect solution to earn your degree, gain experience and hold a job, all whilst still earning money!
