Ian Edmondson — Project Quality Lead

Name: Ian Edmondson
Job title: Project Quality Lead
Employer: Samworth Brothers
Qualification: BSc (Hons) Food Science & Nutrition with Industrial Placement Year
Salary Range: Competitive
  • What does a Project Quality Lead do?

My role focuses on product quality, making sure what we make is the best it can possibly be. I work on factory improvement projects installing new automated machinery and technology, to make products safely and efficiently to the highest quality.  My role also supports new product development through factory trials and launches, where you can then see our products on the supermarket shelf for customers to buy!

  • After you qualified, did it take long to find a job?

I was really fortunate to find a job within a month of finishing my university exams. There are lots of jobs out there for Technical based roles. Also having a placement year working in the industry during my university studies was a huge help in securing my first job. I had hands on knowledge and experience I could relate to during interviews, which I then applied during the start of my career.

  • How did you end up in this job?

I actually originally planned to work in New Product Development as at the time of studying, this was the only career that seemed to be advertised as an option to me. I fell into Process and Technical by luck but realised that it was more suited to what I wanted to do as a long term career.

  • How long have you been doing your job?

I’ve been in the food industry for 15 years, working mainly in Process Development and Technical but have also worked on site engineering projects such as new equipment commissioning and factory expansions. It’s really varied, and I’ve been able to branch out and develop my skills when I wanted a change in career.

  • If you could give your 16 year old self some career advice, what would it be?

Have a look around and do some research. There are more jobs out there in the food industry than you might think, and it could surprise you what’s on offer. It isn’t all food and science related. There are roles in IT, Finance, Logistics etc. A lot goes into the food industry and there could be some choices for careers you’ve never realised could be possible. Choose to do something you love and have a passion for!
