  • What does a People Advisor do?
    • Provides employee relations advice to managers and Team Leaders, on matter ranging from disciplinaries to sickness absence, and also own projects which aim to increase employee satisfaction and raise awareness of benefits and events the business offers.
  • Give a description of a day in the life of a People Advisor.
    • Arrange long-term sickness meetings, review investigation paperwork and confirm and arrange any disciplinary hearings, note-taking in critical meetings such as gross misconduct disciplinaries, update stakeholders on project work.
  • After you qualified, did it take long to find a job? I started as an HR Administrator and within Bradgate Bakery worked my way up to Advisor.
  • What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
    • HR is very rewarding as often senior and experienced managers rely on you and your knowledge and experience. You have the ability to positively affect the working lives of colleagues, and also have responsibility to the business to ensure safe and fair practices.
  • What’s the best thing about your job?
    • Building good working relationships with managers and colleagues across all areas of my business.
  • What was your starting salary? As an Administrator I started at around £20K. Once I became an Advisor I moved up to the £32K range.
  • How long have you been doing your job?
    • I have been an Advisor for around a year and a half.
  • Where do you see yourself in five years time?
    • Possibly as an HR Partner or manager, looking after a team of HR professionals (Admins and Advisors)
  • If you could give your 16 year old self some career advice, what would it be?
    • Always give as much effort as you can to your role, as effort is recognised and rewarded and you can find yourself moving up very quickly!
