Mel Tarr — Manufacturing Line Lead

Name: Mel Tarr
Job title: Manufacturing Line Lead
Employer: KP Snacks
How did you end up in this job?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I began working at KP Snacks as a Production Team Member. Over time, I progressed through several roles, including Advanced Team Member, where I specialised in leading my production line and engineering, and Process Lead, which focused on data analysis and continuous improvement. Eventually, I moved into my current role as Manufacturing Line Lead, where I’m responsible for managing a production area, leading daily operations, driving team performance and colleague engagement.

Although this career path wasn’t something I initially set out to pursue, I discovered a genuine passion for manufacturing. I find the work incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, especially the opportunity to lead teams, solve problems, and contribute to continuous improvement.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best part of my job is that every day brings something different. I’m constantly faced with new and exciting challenges, which keeps me engaged and motivated. I thrive on variety and enjoy tackling whatever comes my way.

If you had the chance to do it all over again, what would you do the same / differently?

If I had the opportunity to start over, I would explore apprenticeship degree options in operations and people management earlier in my career. Gaining that formal education alongside practical experience would have been a valuable foundation for the path I’ve taken.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

In five years, I see myself continuing to grow within KP Snacks, ideally progressing into a Production Manager role. I’m committed to developing my skills and taking on greater responsibilities to support both the team and the business.

If you could give your 16-year-old self some career advice, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to challenge the norm. Going straight from A-levels into a university degree isn’t the only path and it’s not the right one for everyone. I’d encourage my younger self to explore alternative options, like degree apprenticeships in areas such as food and drink, which offer valuable hands-on experience alongside formal education.
