Elliot Humphreys — Manufacturing Apprentice

Name: Elliot Humphreys
Job title: Manufacturing Apprentice
Employer: Bakkavor
Qualification: Level 4 process leader
Salary Range: £20,000-£25,000

What does a Manufacturing Apprentice do?

As a manufacturing apprentice I’m learning all the techniques used in order to run a factory effectively. I work closely with section leaders in every part of the factory to understand their main roles and responsibilities. On top of this I am also studying with Lincoln university where I am learning the theory involved in the food and drink industry.

How did you end up in this job?

I knew that I wanted to do an apprenticeship after I finished sixth form as I find it easier learning by hands on experience. The food and drink industry appealed to me as it is a growing industry that will always be in demand. I came across Bakkavor on the UCAS apprenticeship site and discovered that they offer a very wide range of apprenticeships, so I chose to apply to the one that suited me best.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Every day for me is never the same as I’m always moving around each department and learning what they do. I enjoy meeting lots of new people every day and being apart of a great team.

Has your salary changed since then – if not do you see salary progression?

As I started my Apprenticeship recently, I haven’t seen any salary progression yet, however by the second year my salary will increase. After I complete my apprenticeship, I will be given the option to apply for the graduate scheme at Bakkavor, this scheme will allow my salary to increase every year for 3 years.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I would like to see myself become a Section Leader at Bakkavor so that I’m able to manage a small team and put all the skills I’ve learnt from my apprentice into practical use.
