What does a Maintenance Engineer do?
As a Maintenance Engineer, I ensure the site stays operational by repairing the machinery and systems, this can be short, simple fixes, up to long, challenging jobs where you can really get your hands dirty and get into the inner workings of industrial complex machinery. I also make sure that site hygiene and safety standards are maintained to a high standard by adhering to site rules and regulations, to keep me, my colleagues, and every single consumer of our Heineken brands safe.
Give a description of a day in the life of a Maintenance Engineer.
As a Maintenance Engineer, every day is different. For every system/component that fails there could be a wide range of possible causes and as a maintenance engineer, we will conduct tests to diagnose these faults and repair the system back to full working order. This not only keeps the plant operational but also saves resources and money. There are also days where there won’t be many breakdowns, but there’s always a job to be done. Theres never a boring day.
How did you end up in this job?
My original career choice was a Royal Navy Aircraft Technician, when my circumstances didn’t allow me to pursue my original planned career, I applied for engineering apprenticeships and landed this one.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
I am loving my time at Heineken, I have been able to have a uni/college experience, meet new people and have fun with no student debt. if you want to have a hands-on job that’s interesting, challenging, and has great progression opportunities. engineering is for you. The hiring process is challenging, but keep on trying, it’s worth it.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I have always wanted a hands-on job where I can solve problems and take accountability for my work and see it make a difference. In almost every job hard work goes unnoticed but here, when your work dictates the functionality of the entire site, it gives you a great sense of pride and pushes you to be better.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
I will be a fully qualified engineer and hopefully progress onto robotics engineering design/maintenance.
