Suchitra Charavanamuttu — HR Apprentice

Name: Suchitra Charavanamuttu
Job title: HR Apprentice
Employer: Bakkavor
Qualification: BA Business Management
Salary Range: £30,000
What does a HR Apprentice do?

Administration support in HR matters, policies and procedures, upkeep of HR standards and notices, study for CIPD qualification and work on performance improvement/personal development and work to business codes of practice.

How did you end up in this job?

Whilst in the planning department at Bakkavor, I figured I was ready for a career change and decided to see what positions the company offered internally. I had also gone through the application process for the HR graduate scheme and a full-time position, however, did not manage to get those roles. Applying for the apprenticeship scheme suited myself better as it gave me the opportunity to study for a qualification and gain work experience – this way I’m better equipped to work my way up.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?

In the HR profession you must enjoy working with people. If you’re quite introverted, you will get to encounter many different scenarios that allow you to step out of your shell - don’t let it deter you, as it provides good experience to develop yourself.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Getting to meet so many new people. I get to work with departments I wouldn’t have seen myself liaising with and form connections with people company wide.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Hopefully I will have studied for the subsequent CIPD qualifications and am a fully qualified HR professional.

Did you buy something special with your first pay cheque?

I bought myself a Nintendo switch, it was my first big purchase!
