What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
Be open to the idea that HR is a career that will always involve learning no matter how long you are in the field. Employment law, technology and workplace trends are consistently changing. Additionally, understand that HR is a demanding field that sits at the intersection of both employee experience and company success.
How long have you been doing your job?
I have been a HR Advisor for one year, but in the HR field for 4 years.
What’s the best thing about your job?
My job is heavily people-focused and varied which makes it very interesting. Some of my main roles include resoling workplace issues, supporting wellbeing and work-life balance, and supporting well-being and work life balance.
If you had the chance to do it all over again, what would you do the same / differently?
The only thing I would probably change looking back, is doing a placement before graduating. Placements are a great opportunity for applying your course knowledge in a practical setting, as well as developing soft skills such as teamwork, communication and time management.
If you could give your 16-year-old self some career advice, what would it be?
Focus on building your strong basic skills, e.g. Maths, English and IT. These skills open doors in almost all careers. Be cautious when deciding your next steps after GCSE, and pick a path that suits your skills and interests the most, e.g. A-levels, College Courses or Apprenticeships. Do not stress if your not fully sure on what it is you would like your career to be in long term, very few people stick to the one career forever, and you can always change direction. What you can do until you know is work on learning new skills, gaining experiences and remaining open.
