Bethany Newton — Engineering Graduate

Name: Bethany Newton
Job title: Engineering Graduate
Employer: ABP Food Group
Qualification: MEng in Food Engineering
Salary Range: £28,000
  • Describe your job in 20-25 words.

Professional problem solver – engineering is all about finding why something is broken and fixing it so it can’t happen again.

  • After you qualified, did it take long to find a job?

To find a job that was relevant to my degree (in Food Engineering) it took me a year and a half! I had a job as a Process Technologist (we’d take samples from the test kitchen and make them work in the factory in full production runs – making 2kg of food is very different to making 300kg!) between uni and this graduate scheme so I was still in the food industry. But I knew I wanted to be in engineering so I started looking and found the graduate scheme and I haven’t looked back since!

  • How did you end up in this job?

I sort of fell into engineering by accident – I knew I wanted to work in the food industry but I didn’t want to be in hospitality. I found my uni course (Food Engineering) advertised at a careers fair and nothing else beat it. I loved maths and physics as well as food so the course I chose seemed to be the perfect combination of all of them. You don’t have to be set on engineering from a young age to get a job in it – you just have to have the passion for it.

  • What’s the best thing about your job?

Every single day is different – you’re never bored and there’s always new challenges to tackle. My team are really supportive but give me the freedom to make my own mistakes and learn from them. There’s loads of new challenges in this role that I’ve never encountered before -  the meat industry is different from anywhere I’ve worked before but I love it!

  • What was your starting salary?

Starting salary is £28,000 which I think is really competitive for a graduate scheme
