What does a Engineering Apprentice do?
As a 2nd year apprentice I work closely with the Reliability Engineers and the Asset Care team to complete projects on the lines that maintain and improve the functions of the lines. This area has been very insightful as I have been able to work on most of the machines on multiple lines and have gained knowledge and experience that will help me in my career.
How did you end up in this job?
I knew I wanted to do an apprenticeship but all the options I saw were not appealing to me. A technician I knew showed me what he did on a day to day and I instantly knew that was something I wanted to do for a career. The next day he sent me the application form for the apprenticeship, I applied and got in.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
It is an amazing choice if you are passionate about engineering because there is a shortage of engineers in the country, and with this apprenticeship I have received so many good opportunities that have helped me progress as an engineer.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I love receiving a fault/job and using my logical thinking skills to come up with a solution and be able to implement that. Being able to solve a problem independently gives a rewarding feeling and it drives me to improve my skills and knowledge to solve more faults. I also enjoy working with other apprentices as it is good to have people with a similar experience around you when learning on the job. In addition, I enjoy working with line teams, building relationships and improving my confidence.
How long have you been doing your job?
I have been an engineering apprentice for 1 year and 6 months.
