Megan Proudman — Development Business Partner

Name: Megan Proudman
Job title: Development Business Partner
Employer: Samworth Brothers
Qualification: BSc Hons Food & Nutrition (with an Industrial Placement Year)
Salary Range: Competitive
  • Give a description of a day in the life of a Development Business Partner. I work within the Samworth Brothers Futures Team which means we are focussed on the future of the business whether that is new business propositions and technologies, development of our current customer base or blue-sky projects. My day is very varied as it depends on which projects I am working on; some days I may be office-based working on documentation or project planning and others I will be out visiting the teams at our bakeries.
  • After you qualified, did it take long to find a job? I secured my first role before I had finished by University course. I was an IP (Industrial Placement) Student with Samworth Brothers, so I kept in contact with the recruitment team which allowed me to know about future roles that were going to be available. I knew it was a business that I wanted to come back to.
  • How did you end up in this job? I spent the first 10 years of my career in Process Development where I worked my way up from Technologist to Senior, and for the remaining 5 years I was Manager of the team. I then had a baby and on returning to work, I decided that I was ready to try something new and wanted more breadth and depth. My current role when advertised was brand new to the business which interested me as I knew that I would get an opportunity to shape and build upon it.
  • What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career? The food industry is vast, there are so many opportunities that you can pursue. From the different roles that you can explore to diverse product categories that you can work in. The industry provides you with many prospects. At the end of the day, every needs to eat and drink so there will always be a job for you!
  • What’s the best thing about your job? The people that I work with. Samworth Brothers is a family business and these values really shine through. You can’t go to a site without bumping into someone that you know!
