Charlotte Phillips — Commercial Graduate

Name: Charlotte Phillips
Job title: Commercial Graduate
Employer: Dunbia
Qualification: BSC Business Management
What does a Commercial Graduate do?

I look after a top UK retail Slow Cooked account, driving sales, analysing performance, supporting promotions, building relationships and coordinating with teams to ensure brand success within a fast-paced commercial environment.

Give a description of a day in the life of a Commercial Graduate.

Everyday is different in my role, some days may be office based – agreeing promotions, forecasting and costing up new products.

Some days are spent travelling to the retailer, being apart of the submissions process & presenting the retailer with new product concepts.

I also visit the retailer HQ regularly to discuss business strategy whilst also building relationships with the customer.

After you qualified, did it take long to find a job?

After university I travelled around Aus/NZ/SE Asia. I started looking for a graduate role whilst I was away and came across a Dunbia ad on Linkedin. I researched the company and really liked the sound of the job and what the organisation as a whole stood for. I applied and had my 1st stage interview over teams whilst in Bali!

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?

Take every opportunity presented to you, ask questions and spend time with other departments within the business to get a better understanding of the business / industry as a whole. This role requires strong interpersonal skills such as being able to maintain relationships, communication as well as adaptability to new situations / challenges.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is the impact and ownership you get early on. You’re directly influencing how major products perform on top UK retailers’ shelves.

If you had the chance to do it all over again, what would you do the same / differently?

I would definitely recommend spending time with other departments. It gives you a deep understanding of how the business operates as a whole. I’d also recommend taking every opportunity that is presented to you, even if it makes you slightly nervous – it’s the best way to learn!

How long have you been doing your job?

2 years

Has your salary changed since then – if not do you see salary progression?

Yes – there are huge opportunities for salary & role progression

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

In 5 years’ time I hope to still be with Dunbia, hopefully in a managerial role. I would like to continue to expand my knowledge of the industry and build on the experience I have gained over the past 2 years.

If you could give your 16-year-old self some career advice, what would it be?

Talk to people doing what you want to do and always stay curious.
