How did you end up in this job?

I initially joined Samworth Brothers on their University Industrial Placement Scheme as I was looking for Business Management focused roles in the East Midlands area. It was during this placement year that I discovered the world of commercial/category, the different roles it entailed and the career progression it offered. For these reasons I rejoined the business on their graduate scheme once I had finished university which is how I ended up in this role.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Although it sounds cliché, the best thing about my job is the people I work with on a day-to-day basis. Working with the team, and cross functionally with other departments to solve problems, create opportunities and provide the best possible service to our customers is not only rewarding, but also fun.

Has your salary changed since then – if not do you see salary progression?

Yes, my salary increased by £1,000 after year 1.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?

Go for it! The food industry offers a huge variety of unique roles across various departments, multiple different suppliers and retailers, as well as the chance to work in fast paced own label businesses and innovative brands. Furthermore in commercial; everyday is different, you get to work collaboratively with great people, and the opportunity for career progression and growth is limitless.
