What does a Process Technologist do?
A Process Technologist’s job is to understand the product and the processes in the factory they work in. This individual acts as both a link between different departments, as well as a problem solver. Jobs of the Process Technologist include managing product trials, such as an ingredient change in a recipe; leading and assisting projects around the factory from waste reduction to new processes and being a subject matter expert on the process to help other functions deliver to their best.
Give a description of a day in the life of a Process Technologist.
One day I could have a couple meetings, a few tasks, and some sample collections, as well as project work. A day in the life could look like this: I get in to work at 07:30 and have a meeting with my manager at 08:00 regarding a project I am working on. At 09:00 I go into the factory to collect some flavouring samples for a company making some new equipment for us. At 11:30 I am in another meeting with some of the managers in the factory talking about possible solutions to a problem they’ve been facing on the production line. After my lunch I am then back into the factory to run a trial on a new product that R&D has made, before helping one of the QA Managers by doing some lab tests on a run of product for them and then interpreting what the results mean for them.
How did you end up in this job?
A handshake and a little confidence. The Learning and Development Manager at my site came to my P16 College and made a presentation. I was one of only three people that went up to her after, shook her hand, and had a chat about opportunities. After I joined the outreach programme to see the factory over six weeks. Eventually this Apprenticeship was announced, and I grabbed at the opportunity, getting through the interview process to where I am now.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The people: they are interesting, friendly, and helpful. In my job I am always going into the factory or to other departments and working out projects, collecting information, or just learning. The constant factor is always that my colleagues are helpful and friendly, always willing to help me out. And that goes both ways! I am always helping them with stuff they need as well.
What was your starting salary?
£22,500, then going on to incremental pay increases each year.
How long have you been doing your job?
One year now! Since September 2025. The time has flown because of how much fun I am having!
Has your salary changed since then – if not do you see salary progression?
Yup, yearly increases of over £1,000.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
The Process Engineering Manager, perhaps. I am a fast learner and very eager. There are plenty of other avenues for development across the business as well, providing various avenues for my development.
