How did you end up in this job?
I was introduced to Dawn Meats / Dunbia through the McDonald's Progressive Young Farmer programme, which I completed as part of my degree at Queen's University Belfast. The placement was a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience across the McDonalds and Dawn Meats / Dunbia supply chain, from farm to fork. I was particularly involved in on-farm initiatives in collaboration with McDonalds, such as the AMP Grazing Network. That experience sparked a real interest in sustainable agriculture and ultimately led to the opportunity to return to Dawn Meats / Dunbia as an Agricultural Graduate.
What does a Agriculture Programmes Coordinator do?
Within my role, I coordinate agricultural projects across Ireland, with a particular focus on our flagship sustainability programme, ACTIVATE. This involves engaging directly with farmer participants, offering guidance and support, and working closely with project stakeholders to ensure training sessions and on-farm events are effectively delivered.
A key part of my responsibilities also includes reporting on the impact of these initiatives, across Dawn Meats supply chain.
What's the best thing about your job?
One of the things I enjoy most about this role is its variety, from time spent in the office, to being out on farms, to working directly with our customers. No two days are ever the same. Ive had the opportunity to work closley with key retail partners, industry stakeholders, and a diverse range of colleagues across Dawn Meats / Dunbia.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
For anyone looking to working in agriculture, saying yes to every opportunity is key. Whether it's a placement, a farm walk,or a workshop. Each experience helps build your knowledge and credibility. The sector thrives on relationships, and developing a strong network of contacts is vital to open up doors for new opportunities.
