The first day...

Monday, April 04, 2016 - 10:05

So you got the job and it’s the night before your first day… nervous much?

Check out our top tips for your first day:

  1. Go to bed early – showing up on your first day to work alert and energised will make for a great first impression!
  2. Arrive early – it shows your enthusiastic and means you don’t turn up in a fluster of red face and panic. If you’re not familiar with the route to work, give it a practise run the day before so you can plan how much time you need to get there.
  3. Prepare a pitch – you’re no doubt going to be asked who you are and where you were before this first day so be prepared and plan a short summary of yourself in your head. There may be people who ask what you’ll be doing in the company, so familiarise yourself with the job description too!
  4. Look the part – you will more than likely have had a “Dress Code Policy” shared with you by your new employer, but just in case, for your first day – keep it smart and conservative – nothing too tight, too short, too low.
  5. Take a notebook – Your first day is about listening and observing so you know exactly what you’re supposed to be doing. You’ll need a notebook and a pen to take notes throughout the day, and most probably the first week.
  6. Have a lunch plan – you’re not going to be sure of the lunch culture or what facilities are available so take a sandwich or something easy to eat! Ensure you have a good breakfast too - hours of meeting new people and finding your way around is hungry business!
  7. Put your mobile phone on silent – you want to make sure you’re 100% present on your first day so keep your phone in your bag and on silent so it doesn’t distract you.

Most importantly remember to be yourself, smile and be confident. You were chosen for that position for a reason, so be proud of your achievement and enjoy your first day at work!
