  • What does a development technologist do?

Support the innovation of new products by translating consumer insights to maintain and expand existing ranges while delivering new products and processes. Assist in developing concepts in the kitchen through to factory handover, ensuring products meet business and retailer requirements. Collaborate with suppliers, coordinate taste panels and market reviews, and act as a food trends guardian to identify opportunities. As well as, contribute to process improvements, attend relevant industry events, and provide insights to drive continuous product development.

  • How long have you been doing your job?

Just over a year

  • What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
  •  I would say it is hard; food manufacturing is a difficult world, but it is so worth it. The pride of seeing a product you have worked on, on a supermarket shelf is incredible.
  • If you had the chance to do it all over again, what would you do the same / differently?

I would choose an apprenticeship because I believe they offer so much more than traditional routes. They provide valuable hands-on experience, allowing you to learn practical skills while earning a qualification. Apprenticeships also offer the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, gaining insights and mentorship that can’t be taught in a classroom. As well, they often lead to strong career prospects, as employers value the combination of knowledge and real-world experience.

  • Did you buy something special with your first pay cheque?

The first thing I did with my first paycheck was take my mum to Duck and Waffle in London, and since then, I've enjoyed treating her to nice dinners out whenever I can. Working within the industry, you always get such great recommendations.
