As a Food Engineer, you’ll form a critical part of the manufacturing process. The role can be hugely varied, with tasks that include planned maintenance, reacting to breakdowns and working on continuous improvement projects. In short, get qualified and you’ve got a great career ahead of you.
Our Food & Drink Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship has been designed and approved by the food and drink industry to give you the specific skills, knowledge and experience they’re looking for. So once you qualify, you’ll have a solid foundation to take your career as far as you like.
Your training will cover both multi-skilled and mechanical maintenance engineering, with a mix of classroom and on-the-job learning to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship with a sought-after combination of industry and engineering skills – making you a huge asset to your employer from day one.

You’ll typically need a minimum of C or above at GCSE level in English, Maths, a science and ICT to apply for this Apprenticeship – but employers set their own criteria so this can be flexible.
Earn while you learn
Throughout your Apprenticeship you’ll benefit from a mix of classroom and on-the-job teaching – and get paid to train. You’ll start on around £12,500 in your first year, which will rise during your Apprenticeship to around £20,900 in year 4. So you won’t need a loan or build up debts while you study.
Qualified apprentices can look forward to an average starting salary of £28,200.
Your 3-4 year programme will be delivered by one of our high quality, industry-approved providers to ensure you get the theory and practical skills you need. You’ll attend provider-based training for the first 20 weeks, followed by on-the-job, structured training – and further provider-based training at regular intervals. At the end of your Apprenticeship, you’ll take a 12-week assessment, which will test your knowledge and your practical ability, and will include an interview to determine your final results.
On the way to achieving your Apprenticeship you’ll acquire an L3 Diploma in Food and Drink Engineering Maintenance along with a Level 2 Award in Food Safety, and a Level 2 Award in Principles of HACCP Based Food Safety Systems. So as well as having the skills and experience you’ll need to fast-track your career, you’ll also have a string of extra qualifications on your CV. Plus, you’ll be well on your way to being able to register as a member of the industry’s professional associations, IET or IMechE, at technician level.
