The Level 1 Bakery qualification is the first step towards your career in bakery. Designed for people who wish to work in this popular industry, the course will ensure you develop the basic skills needed and become familiar with industrial equipment. Most students would normally start at level 1 but for some students level 2 may be more appropriate.
An ideal student for this course is one who is motivated with a desire to work in the bakery industry and with an interest in making and baking a wide range of cakes, breads, scones and pastries. You must be flexible and self-motivated. You will need good preparation skills and to be well organised
The catering department has exceptional facilities with several very well equipped kitchens, a bakery and an 80 seat, licensed public restaurant.
What will I learn? Through this course you will develop a practical and theoretical understanding of weighing and mixing processes involved in the production of a variety of bread and confectionery products. You will also develop further skills around confectionery finishing, packaging and selling techniques and food safety principles. What else will I gain? If you do not currently have A-C grades, you will also work towards improving your achievements in Maths and English.
The Food Safety Level 2 certificate is also included within the course.
There are opportunities to enter local and national competitions where you will be mentored by our highly skilled lecturing staff
What will I need? You will be expected to join ABST at an approximate cost of £15. You will need to purchase some specialist equipment before the start of the course. This includes a bakery uniform and other equipment. The approximate cost of which is £150

- At level 1 there is a minimum of four GCSE’s at grade E, or equivalent.
